Awards Night 16/12/09

Willie M - fast start! (slow finish)
A hideous evening: rain and wind lashed the cold prom
along which we were to race 5k. Many did the sensible thing and stayed
home. However many also selflessly came out and helped organise the
handicap race and a big thanks to those who did, particularly Richard
who gets landed with these things because he does them so well. I've
no idea how he managed to mark the course in that weather in something
permanent enough to resist the elements.

Well done and thanks to Richard and his team.
Also committee secretary Amanda who checked her minutes
at the eleventh hour to find out it was herself who had been volunteered
to organise the catering. After a good deal of scurrying about she managed
a fine job (including her trademark superb homebakes) and I shouldn't
really let the cat out the bag in reporting the slight panic earlier
in the day.

Scott starting the race with arms crossed enjoying every minute.
I ran the course but my heart wasn't in it. Richard's
results flatter the time I really ran although nobody ran their best
possible 5k. Well done to all who braved the filthy weather.

That done, we had another shower (ho ho) then went upstairs
for the presentation of the championship awards etc. Douglas, showing
the sort of forward planning that a chairperson should have, was off
to Florida for the holidays. And so coach Gordon took the helm and made
a great job of dispensing awards, bottles and witty remarks. There is
something a bit funny about the lighting upstairs which denies me decent
photos every year so I am not even bothering to put them up here. Results
of the championship races can be viewed here.
Many thanks to Willie J for noting the calculations throughout the year.
We make his task more difficult each time by having things like the
"any marathon" option. Next year it will be "any Parkrun"
as well.

Mark enjoying himself also.
Below are Richard's provisional results for the 5k though
as he says...
“Provisional – because apologies to Shery,
we seem to have muddled up your finish time. If you can remember who
you finished behind or in front of, then a final set of (slightly) more
accurate results will follow”
Given the appalling weather on the night I'm impressed
anyone felt it was worthwhile standing outside noting numbers and times
and they didn't just judge the whole thing from inside the Bowling Club
glass doors.
Have a great holiday and New Year and see you all on
Wednesday 6th January 2010 by which time the coaches will have sent
their new year schedules in I'm sure. Keep an eye on the website front
page for occasional runs (and races) - such as Bert doing an extra session
on Wed 23/12/09 from the Bowling Club, 6.30pm, 8 miler, I think Ma Forman's.
Also Graham and Ricky are doing a boxing day run "from Morrison's
car park at Hunter's Tryst on Boxing day at 0900hrs for a hilly multi-terrain
90 - 120min."

Great to see Ian Goode there, after many months of absence
through injury. However his great form about this time last year gave
him the last place on the starting grid. And not having returned to
full fitness he stayed in that place (for which I was grateful as I
wasn't much ahead at the turns.) It wasn't all bad news however as being
the furthest from his start-time estimate he won a prize.
