Cumbernauld XC Relays

I went along to the cross Country Relay race at Cumbernauld very trepidatiously with a dodgy calf and lots of nerves.

Rachel, Alex and Lynn Morrice very kindly picked me up and patiently allayed my fears of being the slow, old leg of the team saying that it was the taking part that counted!

After finding the school grounds where the deed was to take place, due to good luck as Alex seemed to be holding the map upside down! With Rachels deft driving, we were in plenty of time to register and walk the mile or so to the start.

The weather didn’t live up to the forecast and was quite mild and not at all windy.

We decided our running order with me taking the last lap in case I did myself an injury!

Lynn took off first and held her own in a very strong field, the likes of Central AC and Edinburgh putting in a couple of teams each and of course the Bog Trotters with a good turn out.

Then Rachel with a determined glint in her eye and turned in a brilliant run. Then I set off trying not to let too many folk over take me and undoing all the girls’ hard work. It was a tough course, only 4k but 3 or 4 ( I can’t remember!) brutal hills and quite a bit of heavy mud underfoot. My team were there encouraging me up the last hill just when I was about to give up the pretence of being a runner of any sort.

Alex made an excellent supporter/ photographer/ bag lady and hopefully had the ugly button turned off on his camera. Lynn had made some delicious cake and the flask of coffee went down well, all in all a good afternoon out, lets hope we can get a few more folk going to cross country over the winter, it’s great strength training too.

If I can do it anyone can!

There is an Open Cross Country Meeting at organised by Lasswade Athletics Club this Sunday 2pm at Gore Glen Playing fields, anyone fancy it?
