Dollar Hill Race, 1/7/06

Two Porties took the start at the Dollar Hill Race, Graham H, an old
hand at this sort of thing, and me, a complete novice. My first
impressions were of the informality (and cheapness!) of the race
entry followed by the unfamiliarity of the club vests - notably large
contigents from Carnethy and Westerlands, and loads of other vests
from down south. The next thing that hit me was the first climb -
2000 ft straight up the hillside, I tried running for a bit but it
was killing my calf muscles so, like most of the field around me, I
had to walk most of it. I think it took about 30 mins to get to the
top. I'm sure the view would have been very nice if I'd stopped to
look, but I was too busy trying to work out what each foot was about
to land on. Then a short descent and another climb, and another
descent and another climb, and another descent and another
climb...you get the picture. Then one godawful 2000 ft descent to
finish with, where most of the folk I'd overtaken on the previous
climbs came flying past like I was stood still. Got to the finish in
1 hr 40 something, Graham not far behind. There then followed a most
enjoyable spell of sitting in the sun consuming large quantities of
(free!) tea and cake. A good day out and at £4 exceedingly good
value for money too !
