Belhaven Best Dunbar Boundary Race 10k  1/4/06

Third year in a row of pre-entering this race and looking unlikely I would ever do it. The last 2 years I was injured and this year was diagnosed with bronchitis the day after the Edinburgh Half.

We (the family) were going to Dunbar anyway to attend a child's birthday party in the afternoon so I had decided by mid week I would go and support my fellow Porty runners.

However by friday afternoon I was feeling a bit better and decided I may run it. Saturday was a lovely day and we set off to sunny Dunbar. I had no idea who was running from the club but when I arrived there was the usual large support from Portobello. Although it was sunny it was very windy and pretty cold.

Teresa and I were debating whether to do a warm up when encouraged by Jim Scott off we went. Once round the track and I thought that was fine as did Teresa but Jim kept talking and running. Twice round was plenty for us although Jim carried on. Back indoors, stretch, couple of toilet stops then over the field to the start.

Off we went. We had been told there were 32 marshals on route which seems a lot for a 10 k but there was a lot of winding and turning. At 2k I passed my friends house and was tempted to stop but it looked like no one was in.

We soon made our way down to the beach and along the sea front. Never again will I think Silverknowes is windy!! I now knew that running after being ill during the week was maybe not a good idea but decided to pull back and just enjoy the run.

At about 6k we made our way back up into Dunbar over the main road and for the final 2 k joined the forest path at the end of the 10 miler. I 'sprinted' past 6 runners in the last 100 yards so obviously could have worked harder! My time was 52.19 . Not my best and possibly my slowest 10k but I enjoyed it and for once did not say "never again."

A quick shower then into the hall for the fabulous spread put on by Dunbar running club. You also get a can of Belhaven Best when you show your number. Alan, my husband, ended up with 3 cans and, no, he did not run.

As usual, Portobello did well with the prizes Gerry was 6th overall and 2nd in his category. JIm Scott was 1st in his. The Portobello men took the team prize. And then the raffle in which Jim and Gillian both won prizes.

A great day, great well organised race and great food afterwards.
