Glasgow University 5 Mile Road Race 19/11/05
I decided on a different approach to the Glasgow Uni
5 Mile Road Race. Firstly, I decided a trip to see Janet (who is still
injured) for a ‘go faster’ haircut was needed. It was a
bitter cold day in Edinburgh and I wondered if it would be the same
in Glasgow.
It was a change for me travelling as a passenger with
my best mate Ian ‘HBT’ Campbell driving. Anyone who has
travelled to a race with me will know I like to get there at least an
hour before the race starts. I tend to get there very early and finish
late – this is something I need to work on. Ian, being a Trotter,
has a different idea of pre-race preparation than me. We arrived at
Garscube Sports Centre at 1.40pm and the race started at 2pm. We still
had to register, get changed and warm up, plus I was bursting for the
toilet!
Things, I have to say, were not looking good. I was
surprised by the large turn out as I thought it would have been too
cold for the ‘Weegies’. Then I saw Gerry but decided not
to mention it. Gloves and a long sleeve top were needed under my bargain
£5 Porty Vest (Plenty in stock).
The race started in the Campus then out onto the road
where I’m sure 4 out of the 5 miles were uphill. Soon, I didn’t
notice the cold and was glad of my gloves although I think the extra
weight slowed me down!! I crossed the line in 35:05 which I was reasonably
happy with. Gerry ran approx 29:10 and Ian ran approx 32:10.
For my next race I think I will be back in the driving
seat and for anyone who has travelled with me before you will see that
at as a passenger, I had the courtesy to let the Driver finish before
me!!
