Self Transcendence 2 miler 21/5/08

The easiest way to get a PB is to race a new distance,
so I went along to the Meadows for their 2 Miler – along with
Andrew J, Scott J, John P and Ian D. What’s wrong with these people
- don’t they know Wednesday is club night? At the start there
was much pointing and muttering about a youngster lining up at the front
– not more than about knee high to some of the runners and looked
about nine. Then someone said she’d run 13 minutes the previous
week, and my relaxed evening disappeared – could I be beaten by
a nine year old? I started near the back to avoid the sharp elbows as
the field of 70 fought its way into single file, and then set off in
search of my potential nemesis. Breathing hard, I overtook around the
one kilometre mark. But the whole race, the crowds enjoying the meadows
sunshine kept saying “ah, look at the little girl” as I
passed – and I assumed they meant I was being followed rather
than meaning me. The great thing about a two mile race is that it’s
only two miles long, and this was over before I’d really noticed
it had started: I missed doing a long sprint finish because I hadn’t
noticed the finish arriving. But there was time for a short sprint –
and at last I’ve found someone with shorter legs! (even if I was
last of the Porties)
