Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon 24/9/06

Since the Toronto Waterfront Marathon bigged itself
up so much at the Edinburgh marathon expo last year, I decided to take
part and coincide it with a well overdue family visit.
The course promised to be flat and fast, but failed to mention gale
force (well, it felt like it) winds on the more exposed areas along
the Lakeshore. But overall the course was incredibly flat, and it took
in some of the brilliant Toronto skyline. There were several out-and-back
sections so we had the chance to catch a glimpse of the elites and the
famous 'joggler' who smashed the world record, finishing in 2:57 (and
yes, juggling three balls the whole way).

The diversity of cultures that is typical
of Toronto was well represented in the brilliant support, particularly
in the designated cheering sections every few miles that included Russian
dancers, Jamaican bands, Bollywood dancers, Chinese lanterns and dragons,
and Caribana style shows. As the race numbers had our names printed
on them, supporters often yelled and cheered us by name, which really
made a difference for me. More than enough water and energy drink stations
although I sensibly stuck to the familiar GO SIS gels with which my
stomach was familiar. The PRC vest did catch the attention of other
UK runners along the way, and I was pleased to have met fellow runners
from Fife AC and Pitreavie AC.
I was very much hoping for a sub 4 (I know Paul, gutted!) but then again
I wasn't far off, finishing in 4:02. It certainly didn't spoil the day
or my stay in Toronto which always impresses as a clean, friendly and
diverse city. And eating out is dirt cheap. Mental note: remember that
to reduce risk of over-carbo-loading..
Overall, nice goodie bag, good medal, great t-shirt, brilliant day.
Highly recommended.
