Venice Marathon 25th October 2009

Last year was the first marathon for Ian and me. We
thought it would also be the last, but the Nice marathon was such a
good experience we decided to have another shot. I had never been to
Venice but had heard the marathon was well established, scenic and not
too big around 7,000 runners... The weather in October was perfect around
20 degrees every day, a bit hot for running but perfect for seeing the
sights.
The marathon started in the village of Stra, 24 miles
out of Venice. Buses took us the 25 min journey to the start at 8.00am.
The route ran along side a river through villages including the village
of Maestre, Venice’s ugly sister, where most of the younger generation
of Venetians now live, a cheaper alternative to Venice. Every mile was
marked with various bands playing which gave great atmosphere and lots
of singing runners.
At 21 miles we hit the 3 mile long causeway into Venice
which then skirted round the port. We then crossed a bridge which had
been built especially to take runners across the Grand Canal at the
edge of the Lagoon. The view was amazing of St Marks square and the
end of the race.

The official photos
Thinking I was close to the finish at 40km we were hit
with a large sign stating “only 16 bridges to go”. It was
bridge after bridge for the next 2 km up and down which actually turned
out to be a good distraction and really quite pleasant.
The end of the race was complete with a grandstand for
select spectators and generous goody bag. Great T shirt too. Our kit
was handed to us just as we passed the finish line, very efficient,
don’t think that happens in Edinburgh. The trip back to the Hotel
was a free water bus which picked us up 2 minutes walk from the finish.
I finished feeling not bad; 13 mins faster than last
year. The route was totally flat apart from the 17 bridges! And the
support from the public was constant and enthusiastic.
It was a great race, well organised with lots of great
scenery I definitely recommend it. I’d also recommend staying
on a bit longer and enjoying a holiday and a few bottles of good Chianti.
